Essex Man Arrested in Pennsylvania in Connection with East Orange Murder

A 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with an Essex County murder.

An Essex County man was arrested Wednesday morning in connection with a murder charge in East Orange, authorities said.

Damon Hairston, 23, who has addresses in Bloomfield and Orange, has been charged with the murder of Marcellus Mayes, according to LehighValleyLive.com.

On Tuesday, April 21, Mayes, 29, of Newark, was shot and killed in East Orange, according to Essex County Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Katherine Carter. Hairston was identified as a suspect in the murder following an investigation and a warrant for his arrest was issued by the Honorable Richard Sules, Judge of the Superior Court.

Hairston was arrested in Easton, Pennsylvania, by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Easton Police and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, the prosecutor’s office said.

Hairston is facing charges including murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Bail was set at $750,000.
