Ex-West Orange Police Director, Business Admin Dies: John Sayers

WEST ORANGE, NJ — An Essex County native with strong ties to West Orange passed away earlier this week: John “Jack” Sayers.

According to his obituary, Sayers died peacefully on Nov. 8, surrounded by his family.

Sayers attended West Orange High School, graduated from Kean University, earned a degree from Seton Hall Law School and went on to serve various communities in Essex County for nearly 50 years. He worked as a police officer in the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, later serving as the police director and business administrator in West Orange, where he also performed a variety of charity work.

Visitation will be held in Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Roseland on Thursday, Nov. 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. Read the full obituary from Codey Funeral Home here.

Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. offered his condolences to Sayers’ family:

“I am saddened by the passing of Jack Sayers. Jack was a good friend who was the longtime business administrator in West Orange and chief in our Essex County Sheriff’s Office. He dedicated his life to public service and will be greatly missed.”
