Local Business Owner Protests Proposed Quick Chek

Letter to the Editor from local business owner, Eric Bellomo, says a new convenience store and gas station at the intersection of Prospect and Mt. Pleasant Avenue would cause traffic and hurt other businesses.

The owner of Club 4Sixty6 the disco, event center, steakhouse, and who knows what it will be next week, also owns the site of the Mt. Fuji steak house and is planning to bring the good people of West Orange a Quick Chek mega convenience store with many gas pumps covered by a huge illuminated canopy that will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.

Mt. Fuji, formally the Mushroom Farm, a West Orange landmark, is at the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Mt. Pleasant Avenue, where four lanes turn into a single lane from both directions, creating a bottleneck. There have been so many accidents at this intersection that the county made it a four way stop light. To add to the severity of this intersection, Mt. Pleasant Avenue is an extremely steep hill and is closed off at the first hint or chance of icing.

The landmark building sits on the Northeast corner where Prospect Avenue appears to be like a country road and West Orange a sleepy little town. The Quick Chek will turn Prospect Avenue and Mt. Pleasant Avenue into a Route 22, causing traffic congestions and most likely increasing accidents.

The owner who is pushing this new mega-store must go before the West Orange Board of Adjustment for many variances to change ordinances that have been put in place to prevent stores of this nature to be used at sites such as this so as to protect the hardworking residents and our beautiful suburban town from greedy developers. What the owner is proposing for this site is not a permitted use and will increase traffic and accident liability at this already highly crowded intersection.
