WEST ORANGE, NJ — There may be a new future for a beloved horse riding center and stable in West Orange as a local historic landmark, a report says.

When the Essex Equestrian Center announced that it was closing down operations at the facility on Woodland Avenue in late 2022, it left the future of the property unclear. See Related: Horse Riding Center, Stable In West Orange Is Closing Its Doors

In 2023, the iconic stable property – which seemed destined for a housing development – was purchased by equestrian Brianne Goutal and her husband, real estate developer Romain Marteau, who said they plan to preserve its heritage and make it a top-class facility, according to a post on Nancy Jaffer Equestrian Sports.

Now, a new twist has been added to the saga of the property, The Four Oranges reported this week.

The West Orange Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) plans to vote on designating the stables a local historic landmark later this year. If the commission votes to approve – and it also passes muster from the planning board and town council – the designation would require future owners to get the HPC’s approval to demolish the stables, riding hall and outdoor arena.
