State-of-the-Art Mac Lab at Golda Och Academy Benefits STEM Classes

Golda Och Academy was outfitted with a new state-of-the-art Mac lab earlier this year.

The Golda Och Academy was outfitted with a new Mac lab earlier this year, as a result of STEM funding.

The Academy’s Upper School received 20 new Mac computers thanks to funding from the Dr. Lynne B. Harrison STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program in January of this year, the Golda Och Academy said in a release. Students at the Academy have benefitted from the new computers, school officials said.

“Part of the STEM initiative is to enhance the computer science offerings at GOA,” Dr. Shira Kelmanovich, STEM Coordinator at GOA, said in the release. “With the new Mac lab, students will be able to complete a wider range of projects in their computer science courses.”

Kelmanovich said students enrolled in the Programming Apps for Smartphone class now have the capabilities to implement ideas and designs. Students were asked to develop an idea for a smartphone app, generate a mock-up, describe its function and explain how it would be marketed, the Academy said.

“Our goal in creating a new Mac lab is to give our students the opportunity to go further in computer science and multimedia design,” Adam Shapiro, GOA’s associate head of school and upper school principal, said. “We know where our students want to be when it comes to technology, and we want to do our best to help them get there.”
