Thousands Expected at Komen Race for the Cure This Weekend

The 5K Race and Walk will be held May 5 at the Essex County South Mountain Recreation Complex in West Orange.

More than 5,000 participants and supporters are expected for this weekend's Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. 

The 5K Race and Walk will be held May 5 at the Essex County South Mountain Recreation Complex in West Orange. 

Hundred of teams are set to run and walk at the sixth annual event that will bring together thousands of women, men and children from northern New Jersey foe breast cancer research and treatment.

This year the race take on a new theme: 'We live here. We race here. We save lives here.'

Of the funds raised, 75 percent funds life-saving programs in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties. The remaining 25 percent is donated to breast cancer research.

"We are very proud of the fact that most of what we raise, through the Race and other initiatives, goes to help those who really need our help,"  Executive Director of Komen North Jersey Jennifer Griola said in a release. "Where we live. Right here in our own backyards.”

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and First Lady Mary Pat Christie will serve as honorary chairs for the race but their attendence is not confirmed. 

Here's the timeline for the day:

  • 6:00a -   Shuttles start from Livingston Mall Parking Lots to Race Site
  • 7:00a -   Registration Opens / Packet Pickup Available / Survivor Tent Opens
  • 8:00a -   EXPO opens / Stretch and Aerobic Warm Up Begins
  • 8:15a -   Race Start Line Presentation
  • 8:30a -   RUN: 5K Timed Run begins
  • 9:00a – Kids for the Cure 50-Yard Dash (New this year!)
  • 9:15a -   Survivor Procession
  • 9:30a -   Survivor Ceremony
  • 10:00a - WALK: 5k and 1.5m Fun Walk BEGINS
  • 10:45a -  Main Stage:  Post-Race Ceremony: Thank You’s
  • 11:05a -  Enjoy the music of the Infernos
  • 12:00p – End – Participants can enjoy $5 off the price of admission at any Essex County South Mountain Recreation Complex activity
  • 3:30p -   Last Shuttle back to the Livingston Mall
