West Orange African Heritage Organization Hosts STEM Presentations at Edison Middle School
Edison Middle School students participated in informational and interactive discussions with STEM professionals.
The West Orange African Heritage Organizations presented students at Edison Middle School information on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers, as a part of February Black History Month, West Orange Public Schools officials announced.
The presentations on STEM careers were made on Feb. 19 and 20. The STEM program brings professionals in the fields of medicine, technology, engineering and mathematics into the classroom for discussions with students, school district officials said.
“We selected Edison Middle School because Sixth graders from all over town attend here,” Linda Bullock, WOAHO STEM Coordinator, said in a release. “We had a vision to provide students with ideas for paths they can take as they think about their futures.”

The presentations were made by visitors including Dr. Barbara Davis, a general practitioner, and Beau Younker, an occupational therapist, on Feb 19. Presentations made on Feb. 20 included professors Ravi C. Manimaran, Robert Leone, and Gerald Aska, from Essex County College’s Division of Engineering Technologies and Computer Science, and Harry T. Roman, an Electrical and Environmental Engineer, according to West Orange Public Schools.
“The program helps students understand how STEM can be applied to their everyday lives and as they move on to high school, college, and become professionals,” Bullock said.
