WEST ORANGE, NJ — The West Orange High School Chess Team recently made all the right moves at the New Jersey State Chess Federation (NJSCF) Grade School Championships.

There hasn’t been a competitive chess team at the high school in a decade, according to district administrators. But the gap didn’t faze the WOHS contingent at the tournament, which was held at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft.

More than 500 students in grades K-12 across New Jersey participated in the championship event.

The 11th grade team took first place, the 10th grade team took second place, and the ninth grade team took fourth place – a “remarkale” showing, administrators said. See results from the championship HERE.

In addition to the chess team that participates in tournaments like the NJ State Grade School Championship and the NJ State High School Championship in March 2024, there is a chess club at the high school that just plays for fun.
