West Orange HS Chess Teams Make School History At State Tourney
The West Orange High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Chess Teams had a successful trip to a state tournament.

For the first time in school history, the West Orange High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Chess Teams placed fifth in the 2024 New Jersey Chess Federation High School Varsity competition, held March 2 to March 3 at Union County Vocational Technical School.
"Every year, the New Jersey State Chess Federation holds its annual state High School Championship tournament," began WOHS varsity team captain Andrew Chan.

"Participating high schools can win individual and team prizes in two sections: Varsity and Junior Varsity. Each player plays five total games typically lasting 60-90 minutes each. Each player's individual score contributes to their corresponding high school to make a team score," he explained.
The Varsity took fifth place, scoring 13.5/25 points (tied with Livingston's B Team for fourth), and the Junior Varsity placed fifth with 11/20 points.
