“Today marks seven years since the WOPD and the community of West Orange felt the devastating loss of Officer Timothy Groves. Timmy was a lifelong resident of WO whose impact on the community was immense. Timmy was often seen throughout the township on his bicycle as an active member of the Community Services Unit. He was the coordinator for the annual juvenile programs Hooked on Fishing Not Drugs, Bike Rodeo, and Junior Police Academy. Officer Timmy received the 2001 Life Saving Award, numerous Essex County VALOR Awards and was named the 2009 Police Officer of the Year. Timmy was also recognized by the community with the 2011 WO Elks Citizen of the Year and awardee of the 2009 Christian Love Baptist Church community service award. Timmy was also an active volunteer for the Special Olympics and annually participated in the Polar Plunge, Plane Pull, and Torch Run. Although Officer Timmy lost his tough battle with cancer in 2013, his presence is still felt in the Heights section of town as the police substation has been renamed the Timothy P. Groves Community Center.”
