West Orange Wrestler’s Rise Continues After High School Graduation
A women's wrestling champ from West Orange continues to make waves in her sport – and inspire local athletes in the process.
WEST ORANGE, NJ — A women’s wrestling champ from West Orange continues to make waves in her sport and inspire local athletes in the process.
Mayor Susan McCartney and the West Orange Township Council took a moment to cheer for former West Orange High School wrestler Sandy Guerrero at the council meeting earlier this week.
Guerrero was acknowledged for her groundbreaking achievement as the first woman to secure a national title in women's wrestling. She attends New Jersey City University and was crowned the title-winner in her weight class on March 9 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

According to a statement from township officials:
“Guerrero's remarkable journey which began in West Orange, took her to the summit of the sport and serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes everywhere. Guerrero came to West Orange Town Hall displaying her trophies with her proud family at her side. She acknowledged them in brief remarks thanking them, and everyone, for their support. As the first woman to attain a national title in women's wrestling, Guerrero has not only made history but has also become a beacon of inspiration for athletes around the world. Her rise from aspiring athlete to national champion exemplifies the notion that no dream or obstacle is too daunting to overcome.”
