What’s Going on at Local West Orange Synagogues
This Week's Offering Comes to us From Congregation B'nai Shalom

The month of May is filled with Commemorations and Celebrations at B’nai Shalom.
The Art of Jewish Storytelling
Next Wednesday, May 4, at noon, B’nai Shalom’s Hazak meeting will host Hirschhorn presenter, Carol Golub, who will share The Art of Jewish Storytelling.
That same day, B’nai Shalom is a co-sponsor of the Jewish Family Services forum, The Future Ain’t What it Used to Be: Life’s Challenges Moving Forward. We encourage everyone to attend this event at the Aidekman Campus in Whippany. (Pre-registration is required.)
Yom Hazikaron and Yom Haaatzmaut
To mark Yom Hazikaron and Yom Haaatzmaut, Israel Remembrance Day and Israeli Independence Day, B’nai Shalom has invited our Metrowest Israeli Shlicha, Noga Maliniak to speak about Israel on Saturday, May 7. Then, on May 8, we encourage all to attend the community-wide Yom Hazikaron program at the Leon & Toby Cooperman JCC in West Orange at 7 p.m., and to join the “Celebrate Israel” event with the Metrowest Community at the Aidekman Campus in Whippany on Tuesday, May 10 from 4-9 p.m.

Yom Hashoah Commemoration
We begin the month with a Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance) Commemoration. On Sunday at 7pm, we will view the documentary film: The Second Generation: Ripples from the Holocaust.
There will also be a discussion with Peppy Margolis, the film’s executive producer and director of cultural outreach at Raritan Valley Community College.
This film delves into the impact the Holocaust has had on a number of children of survivors. Following the film, there will be an evening service with a memorial ceremony for those who perished in the Holocaust.

Jule Styne Lecture
Also on May 15, a wonderful music lecture will take place at 7 p.m., on the life and music of composer Jule Styne. This is part of our series on Great Jewish Composers led by Seth Saltzman. There is an $8 admission fee for this lecture.
Seniors Honored
On Saturday, May 21, we will honor B’nai Shalom’s Hazak seniors group during Shabbat morning services. There will be a special Kiddush sponsored by Hazak members following services.
Lag B’omer
On Sunday, May 22, Lag B’omer will be celebrated with a special Field Day for young families, beginning at 2 p.m. There will be fun family relay races, crafts and yummy ice cream sundaes.
Memorial Day Soup Kitchen Event
B’nai Shalom’s Social Action Committee celebrates Memorial Day with an Annual Soup Kitchen Event. Members of the synagogue cook and prepare food for the needy in our West Orange Community. On Monday, May 30, volunteers will serve a holiday lunch at Christine’s Kitchen at Holy Trinity Church. We also provide musical accompaniment for the patriotic songs that will be sung to add cheer to the delicious meal. This is always a very rewarding endeavor that involves so many of our members in giving back to the community.
Asekoff’s honored
B’nai Shalom announces its plans to honor Rabbi Stanley Asekoff and Cecille Asekoff at a Gala Evening on Sunday June 12 on the occasion of the Rabbi’s retirement. Rabbi Asekoff has completed 39 years of dedicated and distinguished service to our synagogue and the greater Jewish Community. For information on attending the event or to submit an entry for the ad journal, please call the synagogue office at (973) 731-0160.
