What’s Happening at Local West Orange Synagogues
This Week, The Focus is on B'Nai Shalom.
B’nai Shalom in Celebration and Transition
On Sunday evening, June 12th, B'nai Shalom hosted a Gala Dinner Dance honoring Rabbi Stanley Asekoff and his wife Cecille for their 39 years of service to the synagogue and to the West Orange community.
More than 450 people were present to show their appreciation, respect and affection for the Asekoffs. The festive evening included presentations and speeches from family, friends, dignitaries — including former Gov. Richard Codey and Assem. John McKeon -- and a speech delivered via video by the Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Michael Oren.
Dinner, music and festivities made for a memorable and enjoyable evening. The event culminated in a heartwarming speech by the rabbi as he reviewed the highlights of his years at the synagogue. Rabbi Asekoff will be assuming the role of Rabbi Emeritus at B’nai Shalom.
The congregation is excited to welcome our new religious leader, Rabbi Robert Tobin and his wife Lisa along with their four children, to our West Orange community.
Rabbi Tobin comes to us from Kansas City, where he was the Senior Rabbi of Congregation Beth Shalom, an 850+ family congregation.
He grew up in Rochester, N.Y., studied International Relations at Georgetown University as an undergraduate, and has lived and studied in South America, France, and Israel. He holds three Master’s degrees (Judaic Studies, Hebrew Language, and Religion), and was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 1999.
His rabbinical experience has focused on young family recruitment, educational engagement at all levels, personal pastoral support and compelling pulpit messages through the lens of the Conservative Movement.
Before joining Beth Shalom in Kansas City, he was the Senior Rabbi at The Conservative Synagogue in Westport, CT (2003-2008) and an Associate Rabbi at Chizuk Amuno Congregation in Baltimore, Md. Our congregation is thrilled to have Rabbi Tobin as the new Rabbi of B’nai Shalom.
Throughout the summer months, we are busy planning for the upcoming New Year. It will be a time of transition and much excitement at B’nai Shalom. We wish everyone a Kayitz Tov, a Wonderful Summer!
