WOODBRIDGE, NJ — At their most recent meeting last Thursday, Nov. 10, the Woodbridge Zoning Board rejected an application from a developer to build apartments in Sewaren.

The developer submitted a proposal to build a new development called The Arches at Sewaren LLC at 551, 555 and 561 West Avenue in Sewaren. That is currently several wooded lots.

However, this is an area that is zoned for single family.

The developer needed to get a variance from the Zoning Board to build multi-family there, and they were denied on Thursday night, according to Woodbridge town spokesman John Hagerty.

Had they been approved, these would have been two, two-story buildings with apartments inside. The two buildings would have had 28 apartments total, according to this report.

These would have been "Victorian-style" apartment buildings in look and feel. Here a rendering of how they would have looked: https://www.mvtarchitect.com/g...

With that design, the developer was trying to have the apartments fit in with the single-family residential zoning of West Avenue.

"The applicant must revise the plan and re-present to the Zoning Board if they determine to move forward," said Hagerty.
