Film Studio Proposed To Open In Carteret

Carteret is still trying to launch ferry service to New York City, but Mayor Dan Reiman now says a film studio will open, too.

CARTERET, NJ — The borough of Carteret is still trying to launch ferry service to New York City, but Mayor Dan Reiman now says a film studio may open in Carteret, as well.

At their most recent meeting, the Carteret Planning Board approved this Shrewsbury-based company, J. Bezzone Inc., to build a 1.3 million-square-foot film studio complex.

The film studio would be called Carteret Stages. It would be located inside a 15-story building Bezzone was approved to build at the former DuPont chemical plant property on Roosevelt Avenue.

Not only does Reiman hope to launch New York City ferry service from Carteret, but he also has grand plans for multiple waterfront hotels and waterfront residential apartments. Bezzone said he plans to build office space, a retail and restaurant pavilion and a rooftop hotel with an outdoor pool.

Not all financing has been secured.

"This would be more like Grand Central Station or Union Station in D.C. There’s restaurants, bars, retail shops, office space," said Reiman this week. "This is designed to be like something they have out in Seattle. The Seattle Ferry Terminal is mind-blowing ... With the proximity to the ferry and the city, it could be financial offices, banking and international transactions ... And then you have the rooftop element."

No construction has started on the ferry terminal, although Reiman previously publicly promised that construction would start in the summer of 2022.

All of this would be located in the area around Carteret Waterfront Park on the Arthur Kill.

This film studio would be entirely unrelated to Netflix, which wants to open a massive film studio at the old Fort Monmouth Army base in Eatontown.

However, some residents want Netflix to stay away from New Jersey, saying film studios are over-hyped and do not provide well-paying, stable jobs.
