Teen Who Brought Loaded Gun Into Woodbridge High School Sentenced

The loaded gun was found in the teen's backpack inside Woodbridge High School March 18. He was sentenced Monday.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — The 17-year-old who brought a loaded gun into Woodbridge High School on March 18 was sentenced this week to three years in a juvenile detention facility in North Brunswick. The loaded gun was found in his backpack inside the school building, a spokeswoman for the Middlesex County Prosecutor revealed this week.

Up until now, police have not said where exactly the gun was found.

The teen was sentenced Monday by Middlesex County Superior Court Judge Deborah Venezia. He previously pled guilty to offenses which if committed by an adult would constitute possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a firearm on school property and possession of a ghost gun.

The teen boy is a Woodbridge resident. He brought the loaded handgun into Woodbridge High School after he got into an argument the day before with another student, said Woodbridge Police Director Joseph Nisky.

Both teen boys are students at Woodbridge High School.

The other boy said the teen sent him threatening text messages the night before, a Monday. As soon as the boy got to school the next morning, he immediately reported the threats to Woodbridge High School administrators.

That prompted school officials and school security officers to search the teen's belongings. The loaded gun was found inside the teen's backpack. Woodbridge Police were called to the school at 8:07 a.m. that day, a Tuesday, and the teen was taken into police custody.

This incident prompted the Woodbridge school district to install metal detectors at all three high schools. The metal detectors were installed at the three high schools in early April.

Only the three Woodbridge high schools got the metal detectors; they were not installed in Woodbridge's middle or elementary schools.
