'Anticipated' Restaurant Openings List Includes Sunnyside Spot

The Ethiopian-Eritrean cafe is the only Queens eatery to land on Eater's list of NYC's "most anticipated" restaurant openings in 2022.

SUNNYSIDE, QUEENS — The city's gourmands are already clamoring for a seat at Eden Gebre Egziabher's Ethiopian-Eritrean restaurant, calling it one of the "most anticipated" restaurant openings of the year.

Makina Cafe, a brick-and-mortar restaurant inspired by Egziabher's longtime (and acclaimed) food truck by the same first name, is slated to open on the corner of Skillman Avenue and 46th Street in early April — making it one of the "most exciting" restaurant openings in 2022, Eater reported.

Cured meat, injera, vegan and seafood options, and drinks — including coffee and cocktails — will all appear on the Makina Cafe menu, which Egziabher hopes will showcase the "regional differences" between Ethiopian and Eritrean fare (both of which are on the menu), according to Eater.

The opening will not mean the end of Egziabher's two trucks, though, which will continue to operate simultaneously, the site reported.

Makina Cafe is the only restaurant in Queens that made it on Eater's list of the city's 13 hotly anticipated openings or its list of 16 other notable openings — all of which heavily favored Manhattan and Brooklyn restaurants.
