Astoria Boulevard N/W Subway Station Reopens

The Astoria Boulevard subway station has reopened, but its four new elevators aren't yet finished.

ASTORIA, QUEENS — The Astoria Boulevard subway station partially reopened Wednesday night, almost exactly nine months after closing for renovations, officials announced.

The N/W train station closed on March 17 so MTA workers could raise the height of the station to prevent trucks from hitting infrastructure underneath it and install four elevators, according to the transit authority.

"I’m proud of the team that delivered this complicated phase of the project safely, on time and on budget, and excited for when we finish the job with complete accessibility at the station," New York City Transit President Andy Byford said. "Our commitment to upgrading the infrastructure throughout this area of Queens is a huge win for local residents and will vastly improve the customer experience."

While trains have resumed stopping at Astoria Boulevard, the station's elevators are not yet open to commuters.

The full renovation is expected to wrap up in fall 2020, according to the MTA.

"This has been a long few months for a lot of us who use this station, but glad the authority kept to its word about finishing on time," City Council Member Costa Constantinides said. "We'll continue to hold them accountable, however, to ensure the elevators are installed on time."

Since the station closed in March, workers also strengthened its column foundations, built four new staircases from the station mezzanine to the platform, installed new LED lighting and canopy roofs and added new artist-designed glass work.
