Astoria Umbrella Assault Escalates Into Subway Brawl, Police Say

An assault with an umbrella inside an Astoria shop escalated into a group attack inside a nearby subway station, according to police.

ASTORIA, QUEENS — A fight that began inside an Astoria shop ended with a group following a man into a subway station and attacking him, according to police.

The Sept. 7 brawl began inside a building on Steinway Street just south of Broadway, home to the shop Hello Beauty, according to police.

Around 7 p.m., a 48-year-old man got into an argument with an unidentified woman, police said. As the argument escalated, the woman took out an umbrella and whacked the man with it, according to police.

The woman then followed the man out of the store and into the Steinway Street M-R subway station, police said. After the man got onto a train, two other men appeared and began punching and kicking him, police said.

The victim suffered bite marks, bruising, swelling and scratches, but declined medical attention at the scene, police said.
