BAYSIDE, QUEENS — After the remnants of Hurricane Ida caused "dramatic" damage in Crocheron Park, a community group is heading to the green space this weekend for back-to-back beautification and community-building events.

On Saturday, Sept. 18, Friends of Crocheron & John Golden Park is hosting its third yoga class from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., directly followed by a two-hour long bench painting and gardening event.

Both of the free events are part of Friends' ongoing efforts to increase community and city buy-in for Bayside's Crocheron Park, which group leaders say is especially important after this month's storm left it in shambles.

"[Crocheron Park] is kind of out of sight... it's not readily visible like so many other issues that are out there," Friends' Vice President and Chair of Conservation Committee, Dana Gumb, told Patch after the park was damaged during the storm.

Gumb, however, sees Friends as well poised to get something done, since the group has been organizing beautification and park-focused events since it formed last winter — of which this weekend's bench painting and gardening effort is no exception.

And, according to Friends' founder, President, and Chair of History Committee, Jessica Burke, recreational events that bring neighbors to Crocheron Park, like the yoga class series, is part of the group's efforts to get people more involved with the green space.

"[We're] just trying to figure out how to connect with the community and get more intention to the park," she told Patch, adding that if more people "enjoy the park that will also do things like help the Park's Department and Community Board realize how important Crocheron Park is."

Saturday's beginner yoga class, which requires registration and will be taught by a volunteer named Ambeka, will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on the lawn between the tennis courts and the playground.

It will be followed by the painting-slash-gardening event from 10:00 a.m. to noon, which also requires registration.
