APEC to Host Penny Social on July 28

Attendees at fundraiser will have chance to win a variety of donated prizes.

Alley Pond Environmental Center will hold its annual penny social fundraiser on July 28 to raise money for its programs and animals.

The center, located at 228-06 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston, will kick off the event at 2 p.m.

Linda Gochna, a membership associate for the center, said APEC was attempting to raise a total $1,500 this year.

“The money helps the center in terms of taking care of the animals and funding our programs,” she said. “It’s a nice afternoon event. People have a chance to visit with each other and visit the center.”

At the event, APEC puts out a variety of items that people have a chance to win through a bidding process.

The center is still accepting donations for the penny social. Items can include books, jewelry, household items, toys or gift certificates to local businesses.

The event, which the center has been hosting for six years, will also include refreshments.

The entrance fee for the event is $12, which pays for 25 raffle tickets, a chance to win door prizes and snacks.
