Bayside Residents Allege Dealership is Parking Cars on the Sidewalk

At CB 11 meeting, residents complain about Star Nissan and 111th Precinct captain says crime is down for the year.

Bayside residents complained that Star Nissan was parking cars along the sidewalk and the 111th Precinct’s captain reported a dip in crime during Community Board 11’s monthly meeting on Monday.

Bayside community activist Mandingo Tshaka said he was upset that Star Nissan, located at 206-02 Northern Blvd., had been parking cars on the sidewalk along the Clearview Expressway’s service road.

“They ignore the law and park cars on the sidewalk,” Tshaka said. “Something must be done.”

CB 11 leaders said they would look into the matter.   “We’ll go out to Nissan again and get the cars towed,” CB 11 Chairman Jerry Iannece said. “They should not be parking cars on the sidewalk.”

Christine Haider, CB 11’s vice chairwoman, said she had seen cars without plates parked on the dealership’s lots.

But a manager at Star Nissan who did not give his name said the dealership would only leave the cars sitting on the sidewalk for a matter of a few minutes as another car was being moved onto the lot.

“We just park them there and then pull them back in,” he said. “We don’t have anything sitting on the sidewalk. We’ve had cars that have been towed if they’ve been sitting there for five minutes. So, we try not to have them out there.”

Capt. Jason Huerta, of the 111th Precinct, dropped by the meeting to give a roundup on recent crime activity. He said the number of incidents were down in the community so far this year.

“The precinct is down 24 percent and we’re down in every category except burglary,” Huerta said. “For the year, we’re down about 25 crimes.”

However, he said there have recently been car break-ins near Alley Pond Park as well as on Northern Boulevard at 210th Street.
