QUEENS, NY — A Douglaston second grader won a district-wide Mother's Day essay and poetry contest in northeast Queens for a piece of work about her "magnificent" mom.

Emily Chan, who attends elementary school at P.S. 94, won the annual Mother's Day writing contest put on by Assembly Member Edward Braunstein for second through fifth graders in northeast Queens' District 26.

Chan's piece, "My Mom is Magnificent," earned her first place among a field of four final winners — one each in third, fourth and fifth grades.

The four contest winners all received a gift card and a certificate of merit from the New York State Assembly.

Chan is the latest student to represent northeast Queens as a contest winner: at the beginning of the month, Natalie Niselson, a freshman at Bayside High School, won an annual Congressional art contest put on by U.S. Rep. Grace Meng for high schoolers across Queens.

Her work will soon grace the halls of the United States Capitol, Patch reported.
