Goodbye Sal's, Hello Lib's

Moniker switch for longtime Little Neck restaurant

As late as last week, there were 21 pizzerias with the name "Sal's" operating in New York City, according to yellowpages.com.

Today there are only 20. This week, the new owners of what was once known as installed a new sign above their storefront at 254-19 Northern Blvd., swapping out a familiar moniker for uncharted territory called, in this case, "Lib's."

That's right, folks: Sal's is now Lib's Pizza.

And besides the name swap, it seems little has changed at this Little Neck takeout or dine-in standby.

"We changed the name... I can't tell you why," said an employee, who like any other day was perhaps too busy making pizzas, calzones and other Italian specialities in the back kitchen to talk to reporters.

What did come out was that the current owner of the former Sal's bought the restaurant about a year ago. However, why they chose to rename the Little Neck pizzeria this week remained unclear. Also, at press time, there was no word on the whereabouts of "Lib."

What is clear, even for this lactose-intolerant editor, was that this restaurant could still churn out a decent slice of New York-style pizza.

And with all of the changes occurring in Little Neck of late — the , the and — it's nice to know that a slice is still a slice, by any name.
