Halloran Spokesman Kevin Ryan Steps Down

Embattled councilman's staffer leaves position to take job with Board of Elections.

Councilman Dan Halloran’s spokesman has stepped down, making him the third staff member to do so since the councilman’s arrest on federal corruption charges in April.

Kevin Ryan said he is leaving the councilman’s office to take a job at the city’s Board of Elections.

“It’s been a great privilege to serve as the director of communications in the office of Council member Dan Halloran,” Ryan said. “I am grateful to the Council member, my co-workers, especially my communications colleague Victor Mimoni, the fine journalists I’ve had the pleasure of working with and the District 19 residents for making it such an exciting opportunity.”

Halloran was arrested and indicted in April after he allegedly used bribery and corruption in an attempt to get state Sen. Malcolm Smith, a Democrat, a spot on the Republican ballot in the mayoral race. He has pleaded not guilty on the charges.

Halloran’s legislative director, John Mulvey, and chief of staff, Chrissy Voskerichian, had stepped down shortly after Halloran’s arrest.

Voskerichian has since launched a bid for Halloran’s seat in the Democratic primary and Mulvey is working on her campaign.

Ryan said he intended to remain active in the Queens Republican Party and the Northeast Queens Republican Club.

“The [club] has grown tremendously over the past year and I’m proud to be the general secretary and communications director,” he said. “I think this election cycle will be fun. People might be a little cynical in light of recent events. We just have to work through it and show people that there are still good leaders willing to serve, such as Councilman Eric Ulrich and our next mayor, Joe Lhota.”
