Coffee giant turns 40 years old today

Good morning, Little Neck! In case you missed it, on the 40th anniversary of a coffee shop that turned into one of the most successful businesses in U.S. history.

And even for those who aren't a fan of their coffee or their near omnipresence in towns from Little Neck and beyond, any company that managed to grow from no more than a dozen employees to 130,000 today is deserving of respect — especially in this employment-challenged economy.

So, Happy Birthday, Starbucks. Here's to another 40 years.

1. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is still hopping mad over a state budget agreement reached Sunday, which he said represented the largest cut in aid from Albany in city history. Legislators are expected to approve the budget in a vote either Thursday or Friday.
