BAYSIDE, QUEENS — A new sapling on Bell Boulevard is a descendent of a tree pulled from the rubble of the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2001.

The Bayside Hills Civic Association planted the sapling, donated by John Bowne High School's agriculture program, at its 9/11 memorial on Bell Boulevard. The second-generation sapling was grown from a tree rescued from the site of the terror attacks.

These ornamental pear trees are known for their thick, white blossoms in the spring and have been planted across the country, according to a press release.

"As a symbol of resilience, this new sapling will serve as a living memorial for the victims of September 11th and commemorate the continued heroism of our first responders," Assembly Member Nily Rozic said in a statement.

"It will be a long-lasting memorial of the sacrifice on that fateful day and a very meaningful addition to our community," she added.
