Pearl Harbor Survivor From Bayside Dies At 103

One of the oldest survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack on the United States, Joseph Iscovitz of Bayside, died Tuesday.

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — One of the oldest survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack that brought the United States into World War II, Joseph Iscovitz of Bayside, died Tuesday at the age of 103.

Iscovitz was a young Army Air Corps sergeant stationed at Fort Shafter on the island of Honolulu when the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service launched the surprise attack, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

"He could see the faces of the Japanese pilots," his son Doug Iscovitz told the Sun Sentinel.

There are reportedly fewer than 2,000 Pearl Harbor survivors who are still alive.

Iscovitz was one of nine children born to Russian immigrants who settled in Bayside, Queens.

He served in the Air Force from 1934 to 1958, then worked in school security in Great Neck, according to the Sun Sentinel. He left Queens for Florida in 1973.

Iscovitz will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in full formal military uniform and medals, the Sun Sentinel reported.
