Suozzi — whose congressional district includes Little Neck, Whitestone, Glen Oaks and Floral Park and Long Island's North Shore — already faces a Democratic primary challenger in attorney Michael Weinstock, according to the Queens Daily Eagle.
Weinstock, a volunteer firefighter and former Brooklyn prosecutor, said he plans to challenge Suozzi from the left. He would be the first openly gay man to represent New York City in Congress, the Eagle reported.
While the district has long had a Democratic representative in Congress, it is been more competitive on the presidential level.
President Barack Obama won the district by just three points in 2012, according to Roll Call. Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton won the district by a six-point margin in 2016, compared to a statewide margin of 22.5 points, the Associated Press reported.
