BROWNSVILLE, BROOKLYN — An affordable housing development on its way to Brownsville will bring a new green space and dozens of manufacturing jobs to the neighborhood, according to officials.

Developers broke ground Tuesday on the Bridge Rockaway complex, which will build 174 affordable apartments on Newport Street between Thatford and Rockaway avenues, they announced in a press release.

The $118 million state-sponsored development will include 11,000 square feet of open green space and 40,000 square feet that will be used for manufacturing businesses, which officials said will support 35 new jobs for the neighborhood.

"Quality affordable homes and good paying jobs are the foundation for successful and thriving communities, and that is what we are delivering to Brownsville with this important investment," said Governor Kathy Hochul, whose administration provided part of the funding for the project. "Bridge Rockaway is an innovative collaboration between state and nonprofit partners that will bolster our continued efforts to revitalize Central Brooklyn."

The complex will include two towers, one with six stories and another with seven stories, according to the state.

The complex, slated to be done by 2025, is part of Hochul's affordable housing plan included in the state budget. The governor has promised the $25 billion housing plan will provide or preserve 100,000 affordable homes across New York in the next five years.

The Brownsville building's affordable housing spots will go to those making between 30 and 70 percent of the area median income, or between $36,030 and $84,070 salary for a family of three, officials said.

More than half of the units will be set aside for formerly homeless New Yorkers, seniors and veterans, according to officials. The Bridge, a social service provider on the development team, will have offices at the building where they will provide services for the formerly homeless tenants.

The complex is being built by The Bridge, Mega Development and Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center (GMDC).
