Here are the top stories today in Buffalo:
- Voters cite abortion rights, guns, crime, and immigration as some top issues in the election between Kathy Hochul and Lee Zeledin, both of whom held rallies in Western New York last week. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz encourages voters to come out for this important election by explaining how many polling sites there are in our county. He says, “We have one in every single town and small city, in every city council district and an additional site at the Board of Elections downtown. People can go to any one of the 38 sites, submit their information and we can print out their ballot for their polling place. We didn’t want anyone to be able to say it was too far for them to early vote.” Early voting started this past Saturday. Learn more at The Buffalo News.
- Saturday afternoon, four local nonprofits worked together to host the first Food Justice Tour event in Buffalo. The event used food and art to promote health equity and educate about mental health, workforce development, and social support resources. It also included the Black History Mobile Museum, which travels with 10,000 artifacts. Read more at WGRZ 2.
- The upcoming election includes an important school board vote for those in the West District. Challengers Le'Candice Durham and Mustafa Abdo are hoping to unseat Jennifer Mecozzi, who is running for her third term. The West District includes the Riverside and Black Rock neighborhoods, as well as Grant and Niagara Street on the lower and upper West Side. Find out more information on the candidates and on the election via The Buffalo News.
- Gino Marrow, the artist who painted the new Harriet Tubman mural on the foot of Ferry, is a Buffalo Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts and SUNY Fredonia graduate. Of the mural, he says "My focus for the concept was this sort of juxtaposition or duality, this constant contrast taking place. What you see in the eyes of a child versus what you see in Harriet's eyes, is a child in fear of trusting, because as a child you trust the adult you're with. Then you have Harriet who is experienced and full of determination." Learn more about Marrow and see a picture of the painting at WGRZ 2.
- A 12-year-old boy has been accused of robbing the M&T Bank on Jefferson Avenue. Reportedly, he left with a small amount of cash and did not display a weapon. He is being charged with robbery in the third degree. Read more at WIVB 4.
Patch deal of the day:
Good knives make all the difference in the kitchen, but you don’t need to overpay for them. Seido Japanese knives are made with strong high-carbon stainless steel (high-carbon knives are more durable and usually more expensive) and have an acute 15-degree angle for a noticeably sharper cutting face (most Western-style knives have edge angles of 25 degrees). For a limited time, Patch readers can get a 5-piece Seido Japanese master knife set for 71 percent off. At just under $70, this chef-quality set is perfect for any home cook and would also make a great gift for the holidays.
