Here are the top three stories in Buffalo today:

  1. A harmful algae bloom has been confirmed in Ellicott Creek, becoming the first in Erie County this year. Blooms can produce toxins and exposure is dangerous to both people and animals if touched, swallowed, or inhaled. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, and irritations to the skin, eyes, and throat. There are numerous confirmed cases in Chautauqua Lake, a small bloom confirmed in Silver Lake in Wyoming County, and two confirmed blooms in Conesus Lake. (WIVB.com - News 4)
  2. The Providence Farm Collective in Western New York navigated the regional drought with some help from the USDA. The collective has established a farmers market to directly serve the communities of their farmers. Since one in five Western New Yorkers is fresh food insecure, the collective feels agriculture is crucial. Heltman Weiss from the collective said, “We in Western New York as a community need to prioritize saving farmland, need to prioritize buying local fresh foods from our farmers and definitely empowering people who want to continue farming in our agricultural system." (Spectrum News)
  3. The Matt Urban Center in Buffalo has received $50,000 through Spectrum Community Assist. The Matt Urban Center has been serving and promoting racial equity in East Buffalo, Cheektowaga, and West Seneca for the past 45 years. Spectrum also donated 25 new laptops for training and technology programs. (Spectrum News)
