  1. Mass murderer Peyton Gendron was sentenced yesterday after hearing words from loved ones of those shot in Tops last May. Gendron offered an apology (which he read directly from a written statement) before receiving life in prison without the possibility of patrol. He is still facing federal charges that could lead to the death penalty. (The Buffalo News)
  2. In the enduring pain of the Tops Massacre, the city is commissioning a permanent memorial for those who lost their lives, loved ones or sense of safety that tragic May day. Led by the local NAACP president, Revered Mark Blue, the committee of 11 people who will oversee the memorial has been solidified and will begin meeting later this month to plan the memorial. (WKBW 7)
  3. Long-time sponsor of many local and regional theater programs, M&T has officially withdrew funding for the 2023-2024 season at Shea's Performing Arts Center. Thea Pecht, M&T Bank spokeswoman, said the withdrawal "is tied to the management issues that started last summer." (The Buffalo News)
  4. In an attempt to control housing costs, Canada is implementing a new annual tax on "underused properties" and a two on foreigners purchasing real estate. Criticism of this decision has been rooted in the separation of a community that has grown to be a "binational metropolitan area." (The Buffalo News)
  5. To enhance water-sport safety this summer, collaborations between Buffalo Common Council, Southtowns Walleye Association of WNY, Buffalo Police Benevolent Association, and the East Side Angler's Association is bringing Emergency Life Rings to local shorelines. These rings will be available so that people can immediately begin life-saving attempts and techniques while waiting for first responders to reach the scene. (WKBW 7)
