  1. Oishei Children’s Hospital has been approved to build a high-risk maternity unit. The unit will consist of 12 private inpatient rooms where high-risk maternity patients can receive more specialized care before, during, and after delivery. Roughly 8% of U.S. maternity cases are considered high-risk, and of those cases black women are about three times more likely to die during delivery than white women. The unit should be complete by fall of 2023. Learn more at WKBW 7.
  2. Buffalo’s annual ‘Walk to Cure Arthritis’ will honor Khloe Kibby, a local fifth grader with juvenile arthritis. When speaking of her own experience with arthritis, Khloe told journalist Sarah Minkewicz, “I know that the pain comes and goes, so I know it’s going to end, and I know I can work through it.” So far, Khloe’s team has raised more than $1,500. The walk is October 15th at 10 A.M. in Delaware Park. Read more at WIVB.
  3. The City of Buffalo should be on track to release this winter’s snow removal plan, which will hopefully prevent a repeat of last year’s February. For those who don’t remember, multiple storms in a row last winter resulted in blocked bus stops, horrible driving conditions, and waiting days for streets to be plowed. While district council men express concern that the new plan will be edited successfully, it is scheduled to be released to local politicians and the public on or by November 1st. More information is available at WGRZ 2.
  4. Ronald McDonald House Charities of WNY has opened their newest project: a meeting center near the house. The meeting center will host all staff offices and includes a meeting room named after former executive director, Sally Vincent. Visit Spectrum News for more information.
  5. Today marks the beginning of the Buffalo International Film Festival (BIFF), which will run until Monday. Venues showcasing films this weekend include Hallwalls, Burchfield Penney Arts Center, and North Park Theater, among others. For more details, visit Lockport Union-Sun & Journal.
