  1. India Walton, who won the Democratic primary for mayor but lost the election in a write-in effort, is running for Buffalo Common Council. She is running for the Masten District seat. Walton said, "when I'm in the community, there are a lot of people who feel like that mayor's race is a dream deferred. Many people, particularly in these neighborhoods, are ready for some semblance of change." She would be the first woman to serve as a Buffalo councilperson in years. Learn more at WGRZ 2.
  2. Deyanna Davis took a guilty plea deal for running over a police office during the George Floyd protests of 2021. Davis' lawyer argued that it was a "bad situation" and she did not mean to find herself in it, as she ended up in one of the protests that June while driving home from a funeral. She is facing a minimum 2.5 years in prison and a maximum of 7. Find out more details of the case through The Buffalo News.
  3. The African American Heritage Corridor is hosting some celebratory events to honor Black History Month. One event will display local artists at the Frank E. Merriweather Jr. Library, titled “There are Stories to Tell: Black History Month Talks.” Other major sites in the corridor to consider visiting this month (or always!) include the Nash House Museum, Michigan Baptist Church, and Colored Musicians Club, among others.   5. Nate McMurray is running against Mark Poloncarz for county executive. Poloncarz is currently completing his third term in office. If elected, democrat McMurray promises not to serve more than 2 terms, saying "These positions are not meant as lifetime appointments." Find out more at WIVB 4.
