- A Fargo Avenue landlord has been arraigned after reportedly exposing a tenant to unsafe lead levels. The apartment was rented for two years after a “Do Not Allow Occupancy of Dwelling Unit” notice was posted on the property. The landlord, Carrie A. Preischel, could face a maximum of one year in jail. Read more at WKBW 6.
- An additional new area code has been approved for Western New York. The area code, which will be announced at a late date, is expected to be activated in 2024. It will not replace the 716 staple, but be given with new numbers to address the estimated 2024 shortage of 716 telephone numbers. Learn more at WIVB.
- This Wednesday, Buffalo hosted the first American Food Equity Conference, which featured discussion about what caused Buffalo’s food desert and other food deserts in America. Kevin Gaughan, cofounder of the event, says "It sometimes takes a tragedy like what happened on May 14 to refocus people's attention and see if Buffalo can lead the way in addressing this chronic inequity in food access." More information at Spectrum News.
- Governor Hochul has announced an increase in financial assistance for victims of crime whose essential personal property was stolen, damaged, or destroyed. The reimbursement rate that used to be capped at $500 is now capped at $2,500. Property that can be reimbursed includes but is not limited to bedding, certain clothing items, mobile devices, computers, funeral and burial expenses, and more. See the full list and learn more at WKBW 7.
- The deadline for the Tops mass shooting’s gunman’s legal team to file for psychiatric defense passed last week. Since no notice or request for extension was received by the court, the state case will move forward with no psychiatric defense argument. Learn more at WIVB 4.
