Here are the top stories today in Buffalo:
- A proposed bill would make New York the thirteenth state to allow students to miss school for mental health days. The bill wouldn’t give students more excused days, but rather allow mental health to be an eligible excuse for missing school. This would hopefully change the societal understanding of mental health and decline stigma. Those not in favor of the bill argue that “the best place for students to get mental health services, mental health supports, and mental health guidance is in school," as stated by Niagara Falls superintendent Mark Laurrie. - The eighth year of 43North’s annual startup competition is around the corner, and this year there will be five $1,000,000 winners. The competition gives five start-ups a one million dollar investment to grow their business in Buffalo. So far, the annual competition has created over 1,000 jobs in Western New York and 60% of 43North’s existing portfolio still has a presence in Buffalo. Learn more about this year’s competition via Buffalo Rising.
- The Buffalo Teachers’ Federation delayed their planned no-confidence vote. The vote was scheduled for yesterday, where they would have officially stated their lack of trust in the district superintendent, Dr. Tonja Williams. The vote was delayed because of the progress on contract talks with the district. The next scheduled negotiation session is this upcoming Friday, which might result in a further delay of the no-confidence vote. Read more at WGRZ.
- The Buffalo Architecture Foundation (BAF) is hosting a 6-Minute Building Stories event today about the Silos. 6-Minute Building Stories are six minute long multimedia presentations that highlight the importance certain buildings have to the citizens of Buffalo in the hopes to preserve special buildings for their architectural heritage and personal meaning to a place. The collection includes photographs, print materials, audio-recordings, artwork, and artifacts. Learn more about the event at Buffalo Rising.
- After the in-person community information session, the May 14 Community Collecting Initiative has a clearer idea of what the community wants to preserve and a larger sense of cultural sensitivity. Garnell Whitfield, who lost his mother Ruth Whitfield during the May 14th attack, provides his thoughts, saying “one of the things you have to realize is that unlike many of these other events across the country or across the world, there was no rioting, there was no hate that poured out from this community. This community came together. Very, very proud of that, and we want that to be reflected as part of the historical record.” Read more at Spectrum News.
