Here are the top stories today in Buffalo:

  1. Roswell Park is introducing Eddy, a mobile lung cancer screening unit that is going to screen every firefighter in the city. Eddy stands for Early Detection Driven to You, and the first to benefit from it are local firefighters because they face a 60% higher risk of developing lung cancer because of their line of work. For more information, read The Buffalo News.
  2. Amauri Smith, a 20-year-old Rochester man, pleaded guilty on Monday for the possession of an illegal and loaded handgun at Buffalo's "March for Our Lives" event. March for Our Lives is an anti-gun violence rally. Smith faces a maximum of 7 years in prison. Read more at the Niagara Gazette.
  3. Bank on Buffalo is launching the innovative Bank on Wheels, which is a full-service mobile banking unit. The Bank On Buffalo President, Mike Noah, said, “We've come in here talking about community, stressing community, being part of the community, and trying to help this community grow and get better, and because of that we now got an opportunity with the BankOnWheels to continue that program and process." Learn more about the program at Spectrum Local News.
  4. Lah Nestor Langmi, a 46-year-old Buffalo man, is charged among two others for involvement in a conspiracy to support militant separatists groups in Cameroon. Langmi is accused of helping raise more than $350,000 in support of the Ambazonian and other separatists. He, alongside the other two indicted men, are U.S. citizens of Cameroonian descent. To learn more about the case, visit The Buffalo News.
  5. Nathan Marton, the new Department of Public Works Commissioner, has reflected on the recent storm. He says that the biggest disappointment was the new GPS tracking system, that did not accurately allow citizens to track plows as he had expected. “We did the best at that moment and we’re going to go back and look at it next time,” said Marton. As an extra story, two of three warm shelters were open yesterday and will be again today for Code Blue 32. Learn more about the code and warming shelters at WIVB 4.
