- A new year means new state laws, including an increase in minimum wage. Minimum wage in New York State outside of NYC is now $14.20, which remains about three dollars short of a normal starting salary in Western New York. Another new law is that you can file a ballot at any polling site in the correct county and state assembly district on election day. Learn more at WIVB 4.
- Two more grandchildren die from Dartmouth Avenue house fire injuries, making the death total from the catastrophic fire five. Fire investigators have ruled the cause of the fire accidental. The grandmother remains in critical conditional at ECMC, while the infant baby has been released in stable condition. Read more at The Buffalo News.
- During the blizzard and on Christmas weekend, a CBD shop in Kaisertown was robbed for tens of thousands of dollars worth of goods. “You break into somebody’s business on Christmas, take advantage of the fact the community has suspended emergency services,” the manager, Justin Madejrich, commented, “Kind of thinking to themselves nobody can get to them — that’s sad.” Keep reading at WIVB 4.
- Baking duo relocates from Minneapolis to Tonawanda and opened Miller's Thumb Bakery & Cafe. Everything made at their bakery is made with flour that is milled on site. - This year's MLK Day of Caring features a blanket drive to keep the city warm this winter. Blankets can be dropped off at the WUFO radio station on Broadway or at the Michigan Street Corridor office on Genesee Street between now and January 16th. More details are available at WKBW 7.
