- After being suspended by Buffalo police, a corrections officer has been hired by the Erie County Sheriff. Former corrections officer, Jason C. Stachowski, was suspended after sneaking in a cellphone for an inmate at the Erie County Correctional Facility. Stachowski was also suspended in 2012 for physically fighting with a fellow jail guard. Learn more about police misconduct via Charlie Specht's article in The Buffalo News.
- Erie Community College has expressed interest in collaborating with the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library. By combining libraries, ECC would benefit from additional freed-up space, while the public library would benefit from the additional resources. However, skeptics are concerned with how moving the library several blocks from the city campus would affect disabled, low-income, and immigrant students. Read more at WGRZ 2.
- The 43North competition winners were announced last Thursday. Each of the five winning companies will receive $1 million to kickstart their business and accelerate the local economy. The competition is sponsored by the Buffalo Billion. Among the winners are a 3D content company, a love app, a company that allows college students to use their dining dollars on take-out, a small medical-camera startup, and a supply chain company. Read about the winning start-ups at The Buffalo News.
- Mirabo Press is bringing the 2022 Screen-print Biennial Symposium to Buffalo next month. Some of the featured events are screen-print demonstrations, collection tours, and exhibitions. If you're interested in attending, Rachel Shelton of Mirabo Press says,“Entry is free, and we’d really love to get the community out to see screen-print work from all over the world, learn some new techniques, and get a better look at the Buffalo printmaking community." Learn more about the events of the symposium at Buffalo Rising.
- A pollinator garden is coming to Silo City to attract people, bees, wasps, butterflies, and beetles. The garden, which was designed by Dara Friedman and Josh Smith, will include nectar and pollen rich flowers such as sunflowers, pink bee balms, and hyacinths. It will be shaped like a labyrinth.
