  1. Almost 6,000 Erie County homeowners, mostly within city bounds, have received pre-foreclosure notices this year. Because these lenders technically do not own their homes yet, and do not know the full extent of their rights as homeowners, they often leave their house before a full or proper foreclosure notice is even given, which results in “ghost homes'' across the county. As a result, Kearns and the Law Center is offering free legal resources and solutions to people in this situation through their co-founded Stay in Your Home campaign. Learn more via The Buffalo News.
  2. The annual fundraiser, Dining Out For Life, is raising money for Evergreen Health, an organization that specializes in HIV and hepatitis C testing. To contribute all you have to do is make plans to go to a participating restaurant, which will donate part of your meal’s proceeds to the fundraiser. See participating restaurants through WGRZ.
  3. In honor of National Disability Employment Month, Erie County Clerk Michael Kearns and the Erie County Office for People with Disabilities are hosting an awareness event in Williamsville next Saturday. At the event, people with disabilities and their families will be able to obtain the proper paperwork and information regarding employment, which can be an important and difficult resource often. For more information, visit Niagara Frontier Publications.
  4. A new event coined “Porchtoberfest” is hitting the Elmwood Village this weekend. Porchtober fest will combine Octoberfest and Porchfest to create an afternoon of live music and special fall-themed events, including a pumpkin patch, beer tasting, pop-up vendors, and face painting. Get more information at Buffalo Rising.
  5. A new public art display, titled Red Fish, is bringing to light the amount of plastic waste found in Lake Erie. The sculpture, which sits near route 5 in Hamburg, was created by artist Ellen Steinfield to talk about the 22 million pounds of plastic found in the Great Lakes annually. This plastic ends up washing into drinking water and food chains. Learn more about the issue and the artist via Spectrum News.
