Here are the top three stories today in Buffalo:

  1. Safire Rehabilitation, a Western New York nursing home, has received a federal fine after a resident was found dead outside. 78-year-old Judith Schrecengost fell to her death from a third-floor window. The windows on Schrencengost's room, as well as several around the facility, could be fully opened and had no appropriate stops installed to prevent an event like this. Safire was fined $52,852 for deficiencies in relation to the incident and has received a total of 75 citations since mid-2018 - the statewide average is 23. (WKBW 7 News Buffalo)
  2. Stephen Henderson will receive an award and give an address at Buffalo State College's Upward Bound banquet at 7:00 p.m. on Aug. 11. Attendees at the event will include local high school students who completed the six-week Upward Bound summer program at Buffalo State. Henderson participated in the program as a high school student in Kansas City before becoming an award-winning actor, director, and educator. The Upward Bound program features tutoring, personal development workshops, and career planning. (Niagara Frontier Publications)
  3. The SPCA Serving Erie County rescued farm animals and dogs from a property in Orchard Park on Sunday afternoon. Dogs, sheep, a chicken, a cow, and a horse were found in a cramped trailer on the property. The investigation is ongoing and police are pursuing animal cruelty charges against the owners of the property. (WKBW 7 News Buffalo)
