1. Center Moriches-Eastport: Cats, dogs and other pets are up for adoption nearby. This week the lineup includes puppies, beautiful, bright-eyed cats, good looking dogs and a guinea pig named Samoa. If you aren't sure if you have time to take care of a pet year round, many shelters also offer opportunities to foster pets until they are placed in appropriate homes. 3. Looking for the taste of the Caribbean Islands? Go no further than Good Bickle Jamaican restaurant in Center Moriches. The restaurant has given three siblings the opportunity to share their mother's and grandmother's Jamaican recipes and life's lessons with their community. 4. What's green and grows in shipping containers? It's not mold. It is a hydroponic vertical farm that is so successful, the East Setauket owner, Ryan McGann, is looking for space, outside of East Setauket to expand. But the containers are unsightly, Town Councilman Jonathan Kornreich last week. He called the farm "the right activity but in the wrong place." Since hydroponic growing is only going to expand, maybe it's time we adapted our codes or regulations on it. (Subscription: Newsday)
