1. The long-blighted train station area in Riverhead will soon be turned into a pedestrian-friendly center with shops and apartments, Riverhead officials announced. The plan proposes a five-story building, featuring 243 apartments, above ground-floor parking, amenities and commercial spaces. "The building, to be located on the municipal parking lot between Court Street and Railroad Avenue, would also feature an open courtyard space at its center. The mixed-use building will work as a 'front door' for people traveling to Riverhead," Riverhead Local reported. (RiverheadLOCAL)
2. A Nassau County man is dead, and a bus driver injured when a Jeep and a Riverhead school district bus collided in a head-on crash on Sound Avenue in Riverhead Thursday afternoon. Riverhead Police said John A. Caputo, 31, of Valley Stream was operating a Jeep Cherokee westbound on Sound Avenue when he crossed into the oncoming lane and crashed head-on into an eastbound Riverhead Central School District bus just before 5 p.m. Riverhead Police ask anyone with information and any witnesses to call the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500. All calls will be kept confidential, police said. (RiverheadLOCAL)
3. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services' Division of Environmental Quality will hold its regular monthly Board of Review Hearing on Thursday, Feb. 17. As stated in the Suffolk County Sanitary Code, the Board of Review hears requests for variances and waivers to the county's requirements for water and sewage disposal for new construction, and for storage of toxic or hazardous materials. Only department representatives, applicants, applicant representatives, and formally invited parties will be able to speak during the hearing.
