Mathieu Eugene Staves Off Challenger In City Council Race

Eugene's victory comes amid allegations of illegal electioneering on election day.

FLATBUSH, BROOKLYN — City Councilman Mathieu Eugene was re-elected to his District 40 seat, The New York Times has projected, on a day that included allegations of illegal electioneering made by his opponent, Brian Cunningham.

Eugene defeated Cunningham 60 to 36 percent, according to the Times. The district includes Ditmas Park, Flatbush and Prospect-Lefferts Gardens.

Earlier in the day, the Cunningham campaign and voters in the district told Patch they saw Eugene at polling places, shaking hands with voters and poll workers, in violation of state election law.

Eugene staved off a crowded field that included Cunningham during the Democratic primary. Cunningham, though, felt he could coalesce the support of the 60 percent of voters who voted for someone besides Eugene.
