Saks Fifth Avenue To Shutter Downtown Outpost

The Brookfield Place department store is closing its women's shop but will keep its men's store.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT, NY — Saks Fifth Avenue is closing its women's store in Lower Manhattan some two years after it opened. But the department store will continue to run the men's portion of the outpost.

The 86,000-square-foot shop devoted to women's apparel at Brookfield Place, the luxury mall located near One World Trade Center, failed to live up to the shopping destination status of its Fifth Avenue flagship and online platforms, the company said.

“This Saks branch location was a test concept,” Saks said in a statement, also noting that customers’ “preferred format is a combination of our digital channels and our iconic Fifth Avenue flagship.”

The shop is set to close on Jan. 5.

Saks will keep its men's store — which has a much smaller footprint of 16,700 square feet — also located at Brookfield Place.

Saks opened the pair of stores in the Brookfield mall in September 2016, joining several luxury brands including Gucci, Burberry Bottega Veneta and Diane von Furstenberg.
