5 Places to Take Your Dog for National Dog Day
Aug. 26 is a day to celebrate your dog, and maybe even adopt one.

August 26 is National Dog Day, when dog lovers from all over are encouraged to celebrate man's best friend with some extra love.
National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by pet expert and author Colleen Paige, who encourages people to adopt dogs from shelters and/or donate $5 to their local shelters. "In every heart there is an empty space... in every shelter, there is love in which to fill it... Adopt some love this day and every day," Paige writes on her website.
Local shelters include the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter and North Shore Animal League in Port Washington.
Here are some ideas for places to take your pet today:
The Eisenhower Dog Park: Approximately an acre in size, the dog park, which opened last fall, is located on the site of a former baseball field and basketball court. The park features an area for smaller dogs that are 25 pounds and under and an area for larger dogs with two separate entrances. A parking lot is also adjacent to the area.
Spike and Paco Wear: Treat your pooch to a custom-made collar or pet tag. Based in East Meadow, this on-line retailer specializes in custom pet tags, including animal prints, leather ID collars, jewel pet tags and more. Click here for more info.
Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter: All pet adoptions will be free at the Town of Hempstead animal shelter through Sept. 14. The shelter is located at 3320 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh. For more information, call 785-5220 or visit www.TOH.li/animal-shelter.
