A Hempstead man will serve the maximum sentence for stabbing a and killing 28-year-old man, officials said.

A Hempstead man was given the maximum sentence Wednesday for fatally stabbing a man in 2013, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office.

Luis Moreno, 38, was sentenced to serve 25 years to life in prison after he was found guilty in June of second-degree murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, the DA said.

At 4:20 p.m. on March 2, Moreno stabbed Darwin Hernandez, 28, of Hempstead, behind a laundromat on Clinton Street in Hempstead, the DA said. Hernandez was stabbed in the hand, abdomen, groin, and head, but ultimately died from blood loss caused by a stab in his heart, officials said.

“This defendant showed no mercy upon his victim when he stabbed him to death in broad daylight as he tried to defend himself and flee,” Acting DA Madeline Singas said in a statement Wednesday. “Thanks to the persistence and hard work of Hempstead Police and our prosecutors, this defendant will be off our streets for a very long time to come.”
