Nassau County Holding 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony Thursday

The ceremony will also unveil a new memorial paying tribute to first responders who have died from 9/11-related illnesses.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — Nassau County will be holding a 9/11 memorial service on Thursday, paying tribute to those who were killed in the terrorist attacks 20 years ago, as well as those who have died from illnesses since.

The county will be unveiling a new Responders Memorial, which pays tribute to the first responders who rushed to the scene on Sept. 11, 2001 and contracted illnesses from their time there. The 6,500 pound red granite monument pays tribute to those who have died from their illnesses.

The new monument is being added to the county's existing 9/11 memorial, which is located on the edge of the lake at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. The memorial honors the 348 Nassau County residents who died on Sept. 11, and is one of the largest 9/11 memorials in the country.
