Burglary, Car Break-in Reported in Same Neighborhood Overnight

One East Meadow home burglarized as homeowner slept while $30,000 of sunglasses were stolen from a car on a nearby block.

Two separate break-ins were reported in the same neighborhood late Thursday into early Friday in East Meadow, according to Nassau County Police.

A 51-year-old Gerald Avenue resident woke up at 6:30 a.m. and found that his 2011 Ford Edge was missing from his driveway, cops said.

A thief or thieves entered the house through an unlocked door between 12:30 a.m. Friday and when the victim woke up, police said. They took a purse, containing cash and personal documents, and car keys before fleeing in the car, cops said.

On Coolidge Drive, which lies perpendicular to Gerald Avenue, a total of $30,000 in brand name sunglasses were stolen from a woman’s car, cops said.

The theft took place between 8:30 p.m. Thursday and 6:05 a.m. Friday, police said. The 55-year-old victim had hundreds of name brand sunglasses in her car when she parked it for the night on the street, cops said. When she returned the next morning, they were reportedly missing.

Two men in their 20s were seen riding bicycles north on Coolidge Drive at 4:15 a.m., cops said. They were carrying a black garbage bag with them.

Police did not say whether the crimes were related.
